Each VPN gateway in the VPN community that requires DPD monitoring must be configured with the tunnel_keepalive_method property, including any 3rd party VPN gateway. You cannot configure different monitoring mechanisms for the same gateway.

DPD, like other keepalive mechanisms, is needed to determine when to perform IKE peer failover, and to reclaim lost resources. This memo provides information for the Internet community. Restart – Connection is VPN diagnostic warnings indicate a that a VPN is down because of an abnormal condition, such as dead peer detection (DPD) failure. In Fireware Web UI, an orange Warning status indicates that a gateway or tunnel has a diagnostic warning. In Firebox System Manager and WatchGuard System Manager, warnings have orange text. Enable Dead Peer Detection for Idle VPN Sessions - Select this setting if you want idle VPN connections to be dropped by the SonicWALL security appliance after the time value defined in the Dead Peer Detection Interval for Idle VPN Sessions (seconds) field. The default value is 600 seconds (10 minutes).

DPD in IPSec VPN Client 5.0.05.0290 . It seems that this version of Cisco VPN Client uses different DPD algorithm, which is similar to ASA "semi-periodic" DPD. I.e. the VPN Client sends its R-U-THERE message to a peer if the peer was idle for approximately ten seconds. The VPN Client may have nothing to send to the peer, but DPD is still sent if the peer is idle.

Enable the device to use dead peer detection (DPD). DPD is a method used by devices to verify the current existence and availability of IPsec peers. A device performs this verification by sending encrypted IKE Phase 1 notification payloads (R-U-THERE messages) to a peer and waiting for DPD acknowledgements (R-U-THERE-ACK messages) from the peer. Dead Peer Detection (DPD) is a method of detecting a dead Internet Key Exchange (IKE) peer. The method uses IPsec traffic patterns to minimize the number of messages required to confirm the availability of a peer. DPD is used to reclaim the lost resources in case a peer is found dead and it is also used to perform IKE peer failover. Hi all, I have two questions regarding the Dead Peer Detection between our Check Point Cluster and other existing VPN connections to non-Check Point Gateways. 1. Does enabling DPD (Responder Mode) has any impact on existing VPN connections? Can I enable it "on-the-fly" without having any disconnects Apr 20, 2020 · DPD is a monitoring function used to determine liveliness of the Security-SA (Security Association and IKE, Phase 1) DPD is used to detect if the peer device still has a valid IKE-SA. Periodically, it will send a “ISAKMP R-U-THERE” packet to the peer, which will respond back with an “ISAKMP R-U-THERE-ACK” acknowledgement.

It looks like a small glitch in connectivity causes the darn AWS VPN gateway to start DPD detection and once it does, it's a slow downward spiral over a couple of hours with more and more SAs being deleted until it finally deletes the IKE keys and shuts up. Once that happens, the AWS gateway has to be reset to restore connectivity.
